Naturalists, birders, and anyone who just wants to get out and experience some of nature’s secrets are certain to find something to please them here! Newton County emphasizes eco-tourism and nature tourism. Newton County’s pine forests, wetlands and Toledo Bend Reservoir are hosts to an abundance of wildlife such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, ducks, squirrel, largemouth bass, alligator, and over 250 species of birds. Wildflowers such as the silky camellia, scarlet catchfly, pitcher plant, and wild azalea are unique to the area.

The unofficial headquarters in the Toledo Bend Lake area for nature activities is Whispering Creek RV Park & Motel just outside Newton, Texas. Located in a prime area for birding and excursions to see very rare flora native to this area, they also offer special packages geared to the eco-tourist. Offering excellent RV camping facilities and comfortable, modern motel rooms they also function as an “unofficial branch” of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce – providing visitors with a wealth of information about the area. The office / gift shop / store is pictured at the right.

Whispering Creek RV Park and Motel has its own beautiful nature trail for the use of guests – pictured below. The well maintained trails are complete with picnic tables and water coolers and meander through the 13 acre Nature Preserve that is part of Whispering Creek.

Area Naturalist Buddy Hollis, also an avid birder, frequently works with Whispering Creek to guide groups and assist them in finding the flora and fauna that are best for viewing at any given point in time. Mr. Hollis does educational programs, hikes, tours, and day trips and has access to areas not open to the general public when leading groups. Below are some pictures from some of his excursions.
