2003 NWF on Texas’ attempt to get Toledo Bend Water

Friends:

I though you all might find this old letter (see attached Adobe.doc or see below) from the National Wildlife Federation that was released back in 2003 when Texas had applied to move only an additional 293,000 acre feet of water from Toledo Bend to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area interesting. A LOT HAS changed since this letter was written and with the past and current droughts and the possibility of the continuing drought into our future, how could Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal even consider selling water from Toledo Bend to Toledo Bend Partners for Texas for 50 years with a renewable extension of the contract for an additional 49 years.

THIS ISSUE IS NOT DEAD AND WILL RESURFACE ITS UGLY HEAD IN OUR FUTURE AS TOO MUCH MONEY IS ON THE TABLE at the expense of the people of Louisiana and Toledo Bend.

As you can see in the letter, in 2003 the National Wildlife Federation plainly states that Texas SRA’s intentions were to send only 293,000 acre feet of water from Toledo Bend and the SRA TX had suggested that the permit should not include conditions to protect flows in the Sabine River or freshwater inflows into Sabine Lake. Now with the resent offer from Toledo Bend Partners, it is 600,000 acre feet of Louisiana’s water that the Toledo Bend Partners’ contract with the SRA LA planned to send out of Toledo Bend without even a study to support what the effects to the Sabine watershed would be from Logansport to Sabine Lake near the Gulf.

In 2003 and I am sure the same thing would apply now, since Texas seems to be after Louisiana water and ever other states water they can get their hands on (they have sued Oklahoma over their water and it will be decided in the Supreme Court, whether Dallas/Fort Worth will get Okla. water). Greed for what Texas wants without any conservation measures on the Dallas/Fort Worth area’s part? What drives these people is BIG BUCKS TO BE MADE AT THE EXPENSE OF LOUISIANANS’ FUTURE WATER NEEDS, not even considering what this will do to the Sabine River, Sabine Lake, Toledo Bend or the people of Louisiana who will need Toledo Bend’s water one day.

IT ALMOST HAPPENED AND IS VERY DISTURBING , SO WE ALL HAVE TO STAY AWAKE.
