SAM RAYBURN FISHING REPORT
Hello anglers. On May 6 Big Sam’s level was 165.34 or .94 feet high. Rayburn’s full pool level is 164.4. We continue to catch fish shallow but the post spawn has pushed us deeper with drop shot and Carolina Rigs. On our shallow rigs we are using square bill crankbaits. My favorite is Berkley’s Square Bull formally Pit Bull. Berkley ran into some legal issues with Pit Bull so they changed it to Square Bull. It’s the same bait. I fish this bait mostly in 4-6 ft. and when its overcast I use the Spring Craw when it’s bright I like the Chameleon Pearl and fish these on 12 lb. test Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon.
Another shallow pattern is a wacky rigged ‘The General’ in green pumpkin party. I use spinning tackle (Revo Rocket) and 7’ medium action Veritas spinning rod, 10 lb. test Big Game and a 2/0 Aberdeen hook. We continue to catch fish shallow on creature baits like 4 inch Chigger Craw and Baby Brush Hog in watermelon red. With this rig I use a 3/0 offset Fusion and a fairly light sinker either a 1/8 or 3/16 oz. black bullet sinker.
On our deep pattern (drop shot) we depend strongly on our Humminbird electronics as we have a Helix 10 both on our console and our bow. I have a Ultrex Minn Kota trolling motor with ‘spot lock’ and I use it a lot when I drop shot. I look around and find bait and fish before I ‘spot lock’. The Ultrex has its own GPS pod so when I find bait/fish I lock us down. Usually these areas are places where we already have waypoints. After I find a good looking area we will drop our baits vertically on the fish. For our soft plastics I use a Berkley Power bait Bottom Hopper Jr. (4.75 inches) or regular BH which is 6.25 inches. I use Ike’s Morning Dawn Bottom Hopper almost exclusively when I drop shot.
For drop shot I also use a #2 Fusion drop shot hook and 8 or 10 lb. test Trilene XL and a good quality Abu Garcia spinning reel and medium light 7’ Veritas spinning rod. On our Carolina rigs I like 17 lb test 100% Trilene fluorocarbon for both leader and main line. For leader I use 24-30 inch and for soft plastics I like The General in green pumpkin party. We are fishing both the drop shot and Carolina rigs on main lake humps and ridges from 18 to 30 feet. We have had some good trips the last 3-4 weeks. Give us a call or email.
