Sam Rayburn Reservoir Fishing Report
July 30, 2018
I continue to fish more on Rayburn than Toledo with the main reason being the large amount of grass (hydrilla) on Sam Rayburn and the lack of it on The Bend. I continue to fish shallow (4-10 ft.) 60% of the time, even 100% of the time on a cloudy day. There are quality bass in the hydrilla and several patterns to catch them. Three that we use include a wacky rig, Texas rig and Carolina rig.
On the wacky rig we use The General and Senkos. The General is in Berkley’s PowerBait MaxScent family. We are working the wacky in two places with the first being shoreline grass. The other is the outside grass line which is from 8 to 10 feet so check your electronics to find what depth the grass starts.
I make about a 45 degree cast as I want my wacky rig to fall on the area where the grass starts to grow. I fish my Texas rig in the same areas with a 3/0 Berkley Fusion Off Set Worm Hook and 3/16 or ¼ oz. sinker. For soft plastics on the Texas rig I use a Bottom Hopper in June Bug and Red Bug. On the Carolina Rig I use a 7 inch Power Worm with light sinker so it will ease through the hydrilla.
We work the Carolina rig on the outside grass line.
On bright days with no clouds we go deeper to drop shot and Carolina rigs from 18 to 30 ft. . We rig the drop shot two ways with one being to nose hook the #1 drop shot hook into the soft plastic and fish vertical with light line. The other is to move to a 3/0 hook and heavier line which I use 12 lb. test Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon. I also bury the hook in the worm and this allows you to cast it.
We have caught 80% of our fish the past several weeks using a wacky rig, Texas rig and Carolina rig. Occasionally we will get a decent early morning top water bite which usually comes on a dark moon.
The lake level on July 30 is 163.9’ msl (mean sea level) which is .5’ off of full pool. Full pool is 164.4.
