Red Hills Lake Recreation Area

in Sabine National Forest
The Red Hills Lake Recreation Area is on the Yellowpine Ranger District of the Sabine National Forest. This area was built in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC was one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs and engaged thousands of unemployed young men on similar public works projects throughout the nation. Although Red Hills was designed and constructed to meet the recreational needs of earlier generations, the picturesque 19-acre lake and the 17 surrounding acres continue to provide a gentle outdoor experience for today’s visitors.

Directions:

From the junction of Texas Highway 87 and Texas Highway 21 (Milam, Tx. – Texas side of Pendleton Bridge – about the center of the lake):

Take Highway 87 North about 3 miles to sign on East (right) side of road.

Facilities include family camping units, single-family picnicking units, and a picnic shelter. There is also a swimming beach and bath house. Drinking water is available, plus three restrooms with flush toilets and cold showers. A small-boat launch area and a sewer dump station are also on the site.
A typical family camping unit consists of a table, fireplace, tent base, parking spur, and lantern-holding post. Nine utility connections are available on the Dogwood Loop. Day users will find tables and fireplaces near central parking lots.

Camping units and picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, reservations are required for the group-use shelter. Call or write to the district ranger’s office for information and fees.

Fee schedules and instructions for campers and swimmers are posted on the self-service pay station at the campground entrance. Holders of a Golden Age Passport pay one-half of the prescribed fee.

There are no lifeguards at the swimming area; visitors swim at their own risk within the area delineated by buoys.

Bass, bream, and catfish have been stocked in Red Hills Lake. Fishing is permitted (except in the swim site) under applicable state laws. Rowboats and boats powered by electric motors are allowed on the lake.

Visitors who desire to learn more about the living forest will want to stroll down a short interpretive walk within the recreation area. About 1/2 mile away, on an easy trail, are remnants of a lookout tower built by the CCC on Chambers Hill. It was torn down in the early 1980s when aerial fire patrols rendered the facility obsolete.

Stores, service stations, restaurants, post offices, and other visitor convenience facilities are available in the nearby historic towns of Milam and Hemphill.

There are usage fees. Reservations are required for the shelter. Check with the contacts above for current fees. While you should check on fees, from 2000 – June, 2010 they have held steady at, generally, $4 per campsite and $2 per vehicle for day use.
